Ezra Grabs 1st Place
7/1/2008 by Matt Davids

Ezra Crane has won 1st Place Sci-Fi Feature at the Indie Gathering beating out Eric Lim’s exciting Zero Trooper F. The Indie Gathering has been kind to us in the past and we are excited with another opportunity to screen there. Screening date and time will be announced shortly.

A Quick Update
6/9/2008 by Matt Davids

A lot has been happening recently. Based on early feedback we trimmed some fat. We also worked out some issues with the ADR and sound mix. The long road of submitting to fests has begun. Updates will follow.

Mark Your Calendars... Ezra Crane is Done!
5/5/2008 by Matt Davids

On Saturday, May the 3rd, in the year of our Lord 2008 the feature motion picture Ezra Crane was completed. The journey started three years ago with an idea and now we have a finished movie. It has been a long journey and a great experience. We had our up and downs and moments of doubt. We only thought about fleeing the country a few times.

We did create alter egos to bear up under the stress. Justin became Lord Suficious Fumson, the 3rd Earl of Greylocke, a 19th century British super-sleuth, apothecary and alchemist. I assumed the mantle of Sisyphus Crowley, his loyal barber, connection to the criminal underworld and all around comic relief. I just remembered we came up with alter egos while working on Forever Cursed our first feature as well. In that case we were 1920’s baseball players. Justin was “Fancy Pants” Jimbo McCoy, right fielder and sometimes pitcher. I was Looper “Loopy” Redgrave, second baseman/manager. Both for the St. Louis Cardinals of course.

I just reread that paragraph and realized maybe we don’t handle stress very well. Okay, back to Ezra Crane...

Of course, the journey is not over. From here we begin the sending it to fests and trying to get people to watch it. We posted a few previously unreleased stills from the movie on the homepage. And we are unveiling our first poster.

More news to come!

It’s Done! …Almost
4/28/2008 by Matt Davids

We accomplished a great deal this weekend. We attacked the movie like a lion attacks a gazelle. The music came together and we arranged it. We did a volume equalizing pass. We did a few sips here and there. In fact, we cut out about a minute or more. We are in a constant effort to refine and hone the film. But the most important thing is that it is almost done. All we have left to do is a bit of clean up then we can start making screeners.

Now, for a flashback! Where we were one year ago...

Have Respect for Your Dead Fantastic Elders!

4/28/2007 by Matt Davids

So came the cry as Justin wanted to hear Peter Cushing playing the Sheriff of Nottingham. This of course came long after we were done working. Well, after anyway. Jaxon came out to the newly revamped studio and we recorded more ADR. I’m getting spoiled because now I can lie on the couch and pretend I’m Peter Jackson. I mentioned two men named Peter! Here are pictures of the studio.

And two years ago...

Rewrites and Read Through

4/29/2006 by Matt Davids

This week I went over the whole screenplay and did rewrites on most everything. I smoothed out a lot of areas where I had been lazy. The scenes flow better now and some of the dialogue is less abrupt. I feel the screenplay is really coming together now. Tonight Justin and I read the entire script out loud and made notes about locations, equipment needs and other shooting issues. We figured out how to shoot one complex scene in a very simple and straightforward manner that will make our lives easier during shooting. We also started building a time table of when we need cast, crew and equipment. I'm starting to get really excited about this movie. It's more creative than Forever Cursed and more personal. Hopefully we will be able to produce a motion picture that is poignant and entertaining as well. Keep checking back for more updates.

Music of the Spheres
4/21/2008 by Matt Davids
Okay. Maybe it’s not that dramatic, but music work is continuing. In fact, we jumped into high gear this weekend. Several scenes are looking good and are almost complete. Music is making it an entirely different film which is exciting. Also, we re-cut two scenes. We feel we are getting close to wrapping everything up. Keep checking back.
Woo Hoo!
3/17/2008 by Matt Davids
Justin and I finally got Ezra all cleaned up. Everything is in place and the movie looks good. Now we move on to the music phase.
So Close
3/10/2008 by Matt Davids
Okay, we cleaned up a few simple things here and there. We tinkered with one scene and got it to our liking. Now we only have one minor thing to take care of and then we can get it into the hands of a composer. Stay tuned!
Make! Not! Do! Reeducation!
2/25/2008 by Matt Davids
Okay, we re-recorded the AI voice. Kevin came out and did a great job. Now we just have to put it together, but it sounds great. I’ve been watching the new edit and making notes. We are getting close.
Minor Setback
2/12/2008 by Matt Davids
We got knocked off track a little this past weekend. Work will continue. Mark my words!
The End is in Sight
1/31/2008 by Matt Davids
I’m serious... really. We are getting close to finishing at last. We have some clean up to do on audio and color, then a re-record of the AI voice. This time we’ve got a real good handle on what we want and how to get it. Music is next after all of this. We are really excited about an opportunity to work an exciting composer. More news on this coming soon so check back often.
We are Still Alive… Barely
1/8/2008 by Matt Davids
Okay, it’s been awhile since I updated. Everything was crazy with the holidays and all as I’m sure everybody knows. Work has continued, though. We color-corrected the entire movie. We added the few visual effects that were needed. We restructured one or two major scenes. We also completed a full rough draft of all the sound design. All that remains now is to smooth out the sound and hire a composer. Stay tuned.
Cleanup
12/10/2007 by Matt Davids
This week we cleaned up a few scenes. We put some final touches on sound in a few places. We improved the animal men roars and growls here and there. We did a small re-edit on one of the fight scenes. We are now set to do full audio and visual passes over the whole movie.
Full of Sound and Foley…
12/3/2007 by Matt Davids
This weekend we recorded some more sounds. Mostly we did walking on leaves and scuffling. We recorded a fall and some random coat sounds. Also, we did some Foley. I breathed for Ezra in one scene and clapped for him in another. We are finally done recording. Nothing else has to be created and inserted into the movie. We are now set to do a full audio pass correcting volume and tweaking effects. Next is a full video pass correcting color and adding a few small visual effects. Then music and we are done. Keep checking back.
Sure and Steady
11/26/2007 by Matt Davids
We’re still plugging away. This weekend we did a lot of work. We cleaned up a few of the edits we did last week. We added and adjusted background sound. We tweaked the last bits of ADR. We color corrected more shots. We compiled a list of sounds and Foley work that we still need to finish. We are making sure and steady progress and the best part is that the end is in sight. Keep checking back.
Back At It...
11/19/2007 by Matt Davids
Okay, we are back at postproduction after some breaks and vacations. I had made many notes after watching the rough cut over and over. This allowed us to complete a reedit and an overall tighten of the whole movie. We trimmed a lot of fat and the movie moves quicker and plays better. We also cleaned up the ADR files and placed the final bits of Alysha’s ADR into the movie. And after all of that we color corrected a number of scenes. So, even though we had some time off work is progressing quite well. We are still shooting for a January completion date.
ADR Complete
10/15/2007 by Matt Davids
We completed a major step this weekend. ADR is finally done with the possible exception of a makeup day. Alysha turned in another fine performance and we finished all her lines. We are all very pleased. It has been a big job and we are all relieved to have it behind us. Once Justin and I get the takes in place the movie will be almost 90% complete. Keep checking back for more updates.
Still Working
10/8/2007 by Matt Davids
Progress has been made despite the lack of updates. Justin and I did a lot of sound work last week. Alysha came out yesterday and we knocked out more of her ADR. She probably has only a session or two left. We finally got a rough cut DVD together. Now I can watch what we have so far and make notes. We are getting very close, but we want to make sure we have done our best. Keep checking back.
A “Rough” Day
9/24/2007 by Matt Davids
We were able to get all of Jaxon’s ADR in place this weekend. We also hammered out a new rough cut. It’s the first one in awhile since we’ve been focusing on ADR for so long. Watching many scenes for the first time with both ADR tracks is exciting. Scenes I was worried about come to life and play very well. Now, starts a phase where I watch the rough cut over and over again and make notes. I’ll be looking for mistakes and things that still need to be done. I’ll figure out sounds we still need, look for editing trims and check the overall quality of the ADR. Should be fun!
One Step Closer...
9/17/2007 by Matt Davids
This weekend we completed Jaxon’s ADR. Every line that was spoken by him through the entire film has been rerecorded. This moves us a huge step closer to finishing the movie. Now, we can focus on a wrapping up a number of scenes since we have all the elements we need. Also, we only have two more two more ADR sessions with Alysha. Once that is done things should move quickly. Stay tuned!
A Long Day of ADR
9/10/2007 by Matt Davids
Jaxon came out this weekend and we pounded out more ADR. We wrapped up a number of scenes. Also, we tackled the most complex dialogue scene and got more than half of it done. We are very close to being done with all of Jaxon’s ADR. It looks like all we need is one more week. Getting his ADR done will be a big step toward finishing the movie. Things should start coming together quickly now.
New Ezra Crane Trailer
9/3/2007 by Matt Davids
We launched a new trailer on Friday. We’ve been working on this one for awhile. We wanted to show off some of our locations and give this one a different feel. Check it out! ADR continued again this weekend. Alysha came out on Friday and we started her most complex scene. We plowed through two pages of dialogue. Once we are done with scene all we have is some short odds and ends and redo here or there. Jaxon came out on Saturday and we really got after his ADR. We completed several scenes knocking out quite a bit. I would guess we still have about four sessions before we are done with Jaxon’s ADR.
Background Sound
8/27/2007 by Matt Davids
This weekend we added background sound into several scenes. Each scene really takes shape when the sounds are place in them. We now have only a few scenes that still need sound. ADR should continue next weekend and we are getting close to being done with that as well. Also, we have a new studio location. Soon, we’ll post pictures of the editing suite and the sound booth.
ADR Madness
8/20/2007 by Matt Davids
ADR continued at breakneck pace this weekend. Jaxon journeyed to the studio and we banged out three more scenes. We were able to move quickly and effectively. Jaxon gave fine performances. We are now in the home stretch of the ADR phase. After Jaxon left Justin and I worked through ADR from past weeks picking the best takes. A couple more scenes are now almost complete. Seeing the graveyard scene with background sound and ADR was very rewarding. Each week the movie pulls together more and more.
Quiet Earth Releases Exclusive Photos
8/13/2007 by Matt Davids
Quiet Earth, a post-apocalyptic movie news site, posted some exclusive of photos of Ezra Crane last week. To see the pictures and read the write up visit: http://www.quietearth.us/articles/2007/08/06/Exclusive-photos-from-Ezra-Crane. Postproduction continued this weekend with more ADR. Jaxon gave another fine performance and we were able to wrap up a couple more scenes.
More Exciting Developments
8/6/2007 by Matt Davids
Progress surged ahead this past weekend. It started off with a few editing tweaks on a couple of scenes. We did a lot of background sound work adding footsteps, forest ambience, birdcalls and such. Alysha came out and recorded more ADR. She now only has one scene left which just happens to be her longest and most complex. Also, we started cutting a new trailer. Hopefully, we’ll be able to post it in a week or two when we get it smoothed out. And if you hadn’t noticed the Ezra Crane site has under gone a facelift. It still needs some work and new content will be coming soon. Keep checking back.
Work, Work!
7/23/2007 by Matt Davids
Justin and I hammered out sound on several more scenes this weekend. We worked on some ADR that Alysha recorded a few weeks ago and got it all placed in the movie. The sound work is really making the scenes come alive. We reedited a scene so now the running time is around 79 minutes. Progress seems slow at times, but it is steady. More and more of the final version comes together each week.
More Foley
7/16/2007 by Matt Davids
Justin and I squeezed in a half day’s work after I got back from my trip. I created footsteps, backpack rustling and other various sounds for scene #8. We started arranging them and working with background sound as well. The scene needs a lot more attention, but it was a good start on a long and complex scene.
Moving Right Along
7/2/2007 by Matt Davids
Alysha came out to the studio on Saturday. We recorded ADR on several more of her scenes. She is very close to being done with her ADR. She only has two more scenes and some touch up work here and there. After she went home Justin and I went through the whole movie. We watched the pacing and tightened a number of scenes. We smoothed out the open and shaved off some unneeded bits in the dream sequences. We now have a running time of 80 minutes. I’ll be out of the country next week so there won’t be an update for a couple of weeks.
They call me Bible-reading Howard
6/25/2007 by Matt Davids
...but don’t hold that against me. Okay that’s a random quote from a goofy 50’s Western and has nothing to do with Ezra Crane. Alright back on topic... Saturday was a big day! Alysha knocked out three more scenes of ADR. They were pretty long scenes and we spent a lot of time on them. We are constantly thrilled at how our cast is improving their performances through ADR. After Alysha left we placed ADR tracks in scenes and reviewed some work from last weekend.
Marcus Aurelius would be Proud
6/18/2007 by Matt Davids
No, actually he wouldn’t. Okay, enough with the inane ramblings. Following a break last weekend work picked up again on the 16th. Jaxon delivered another fine ADR performance and we nailed down a long scene. After Jaxon left Justin and I broke out our new toy: a high quality sound library. We searched it and identified sounds we thought would work in certain areas. We then started at the beginning and worked on all the sound up to about the five minute mark. Foley, background, and other accent sounds are now fully in place for this sequence. Things should really start rolling now. We are looking forward to working through rest of the movie. Keep checking back!
We Need Freon!
6/2/2007 by Matt Davids
I spent most of the day crammed into a small padded room… Then I went over to the studio and Justin and I did Foley work. Okay I was in the padded room while doing Foley. It just sounded funnier saying it that way. I acted out footsteps, backpacks rustling and other random sounds. We did all the sounds for two complex scenes. We only have like 40 more! Yeah! Well, we are making progress but it is a slow process. I guess we could have done more work if we hadn’t spent three hours on You Tube not to mention watching Meltdown: Days of Destruction.
As the ADR Turns…
5/28/2007 by Matt Davids
ADR continued this weekend. Alysha made the arduous trek out to the studio and we rolled through another scene. We now have the majority of her part recorded and placed in the movie. After Alysha left we went through the entire movie and made a full list of all the Foley we still need. We also made notes on the ADR and identified some possible retakes. Hopefully, we’ve turned a corner and are getting closer to the finish line. I can’t wait to wrap up post and start showing it to people.
I Really Don’t Know How to Operate any of this Equipment
5/19/2007 by Matt Davids
The day started well until Justin made this admission. I was concerned at first, but then I realized it didn’t matter and we continued working. Alysha came out and we wrapped up ADR on two more scenes. She’s doing some really fine work and we couldn’t be happier. After she left we attacked some more scenes adding foley and various sounds. I get the pleasure of walking and matching foot sounds and the like. Actually it’s pretty cool. We also did some more planning for future sound design. Hopefully we will hit the halfway point here pretty soon. Keep checking back for more updates.
Word is Getting Out
5/16/2007 by Matt Davids
We got another shout out. This one comes from Post-Apocalypse (www.post-apocalypse.co.uk). The Ezra Crane comments can be found at http://www.post-apocalypse.co.uk/news.html. The word about our humble little motion picture is spreading even further.
Ezra Write Up
5/14/2007 by Matt Davids
Thanks to the Quiet Earth blog (www.quietearth.us) for the mention of Ezra Crane. We’re glad to see word is spreading.
Bear Breath and Squealing Pigs
5/7/2007 by Matt Davids
Saturday saw more ADR. Jaxon came out and delivered a great performance which enhanced several scenes. After ADR Justin and I went through and roughed in some animal sounds. We’re trying to see what works for the “animal men.” So far bear breath and squealing pigs are working well. We have a lot more work to do most of which will be trial and error. But, for the most part the sound work is coming together. The few scenes we have completed with ADR and background really come alive. That said replacing the entire dialogue track on an independent feature should only be attempted by the mentally unstable. So that’s why we’re doing it. As usual the day ended up watching 80’s action movies and drinking root beer. We also wasted some time by taking pictures.
Foley and Sound Work
4/23/2007 by Matt Davids
Saturday Justin and I finished up two scenes complete with ADR, Foley and background sound. Well, they could still use a sweeten but for the most part they are done. The scenes play so much better it’s amazing. It is so true that sound is half of the movie. I got to play Foley artist which is always fun. I walked on leaves in the sound booth. I put on coats and backpacks and rattled chains. We also went back and sweetened the A.I. voice. It now fills the location better besides simply having a better all around quality. Of course, after that working turned into gazing slack-jawed at anime, action movies and UFC fighting.
Terracotta Warriors and Stringed Hoards
4/14/2007 by Matt Davids
Jaxon came out today and we recorded a few scenes. We have a lot of work left but we are making progress. Yeah, the title doesn’t really have anything to do with what we did today.
The Attack of the Monkey Slipper
3/24/2007 by Matt Davids
A lot has transpired this week. On Sunday Kevin Andrew Guidorzi came out to the studio and voiced the role of the A.I. We are pleased with the quality of his voice and his performance. It should add an interesting aspect to the A.I. Today, Alysha came out and we recorded several more of her scenes. Things went smoothly until I had to beat her with her own monkey slipper to get her to work harder. But she grabbed a nearby machete and chopped me to bloody bits. It’s truly amazing that I can type this very blog entry. Truly, I say!
ADR Continues
3/10/2007 by Matt Davids
Alysha came out to the studio today and we did more ADR. We wrapped up four more scenes. We are now well on our way but we have a lot of work ahead of us still. After Justin and I finished ADR we spent the rest of the day watching bad movies. Well I guess that’s nothing new.
Loopy Looping
3/4/2007 by Matt Davids
We’ve officially started ADR. Alysha recorded a scene last week and today Justin and I put together sound and image. Alysha has never done looping before but she is catching on real quick. The scene looks great. We should be able to move through the scenes quickly once we work out a schedule with our other actors.
You are in Violation!
2/17/2007 by Matt Davids
Okay this time we have no excuse for not updating so I’m not even going to make up one. In the past week we hired composer Michael B. Dunsmoor to score Ezra Crane. We are confident Michael will bring creativity and passion to the project. Today we searched the whole movie and fixed a few things here and there. We’re pretty sure we have achieved picture lock. The runtime is now 83 minutes. Justin put the final touches on the sound booth and we are set to start ADR very soon. After all this we decided to consult the oracle of George Lucas by setting our visual receptors on THX 1138 which proved to be a useless if not slightly hallucinogenic endeavor.
Back in the Saddle
1/27/2007 by Matt Davids

Okay, we’re really sorry about not updating in a while but we have really good reasons this time. You see I was out of the country and Justin was out of his mind. Now I rarely go out of the country but it seems Justin is always out of his mind. Editing resumed today with tweaks here and there. We’re getting very close to picture lock. We also smoothed out transitions and created a little sequence that helps set the tone at the beginning better. We pulled out some still frames for your enjoyment.

A Cut Less Rough
1/3/2007 by Matt Davids
Justin and I went over each scene on Saturday refining and reshaping them here and there. The run time is now about 84 minutes. We reedited the intro of one of the fight scenes making it much smoother. We shortened the traveling montage some. We also tweaked the open credit sequence making it play better. I’ve watched this cut a couple of times and there is still some work to be done, but I feel we are getting close to the final edit. Progress looks to be slowed the next couple of weeks, but should pick up again with ADR and maybe some developments on the music front by late January or early February. Keep checking back.
Rough Cut
12/27/2006 by Matt Davids
Sorry about the lack of updates, but there are always so many things going on this time of year. Editing has continued the past two weekends and we’ve made a lot of progress. In fact on the 23rd we finished the first full rough cut that is just shy of 89 minutes. I have to say I’m very pleased with how the movie is coming together. It’s hard to explain, but the movie just has a good feel to it. And it should only get better when we add music and sound effects. We have tons of work left but I’m really excited. Keep checking back.
May the Edit be with You
12/9/2006 by Matt Davids
Editing gained more steam today as we cut together about nine scenes. We are really moving well through the footage and have well over an hour of the movie cut already. Justin and I kind of took a step back today. We are astonished at the speed which we are editing. Compared to Forever Cursed we are flying as it took us about four months to get an hour long cut of that movie. We think this is due in part to a number of factors including: a new video capture system, the fact that I didn’t shoot master shots and that we have more experience this time around. We feel we can get a full rough cut within a few weeks or a month. This will enable us to start ADR and sound design very soon. Keep checking back!
Even Frost Ogres Can’t Prevent Editing
12/6/2006 by Matt Davids
Saturday I fought my way through snow, ice and frost ogres to get to the studio. Justin and I then cut together another scene. We were only able to cut together one scene because it’s long. It’s an important scene between Ezra and Feather where he tells her a story. Needless to say I really enjoy this scene. It works on a number of levels setting a great tone for the characters and their world. Keep checking back.

First Real Day of Editing
11/27/2006 by Matt Davids
Saturday Justin and I began cutting. We were able to get a rough cut of four scenes. Since I shot most scenes only one way things moved quickly. We also finished the trailer which I’m very excited about. It should be posted this week sometime. More exciting news is coming soon.
That’s a Wrap!
11/13/2006 by Matt Davids
On Saturday the 11th Ezra Crane wrapped. We gathered one more time after a short six days off and grabbed the last few shots we needed. Most of the shots involved the dune buggy so we all had a lot of fun. Alysha got to crash the buggy into some trees. I think she enjoyed it. We also did a little green screen work for the dream sequences. Then we finished off the day with some audio recording of Alysha for the trailer which should be posted to the site very soon. Justin and I then treated Jaxon, Alysha and Andy to a very fine meal at Longhorn Steakhouse as a thank you/wrap party. I can’t believe production is done and all the footage is in the hard drive. We can’t really begin to thank everybody enough. Our crew was small but everyone was dedicated and I know the movie will reflect that. Here’s a list of everyone that worked on the feature (so far): Jaxon Stanford, Alysha Menke, Andy Collins, Lloyd Longsworth, Patrick Voss, Tyler Shaw and Joe Hammerstone. I’m sure a few more names will be added as postproduction commences. Keep checking back to see how Ezra Crane comes together over the next few months.
Ezra Crane Website Update
11/8/2006 by Justin Buchanan
The Ezra Crane website has been updated with a new look. Now that principal is mostly complete, we thought it was time to tweak the site to more closely match the feel of the picture. Also, there are lots of new Ezra Crane wallpapers available in the Downloads section. Enjoy!
Final Stretch of Production
11/6/2006 by Matt Davids
Sunday the last dialogue scene was shot and with that the bulk of the movie is now in the hard drive. We still have some dune buggy shots and maybe one or two little re-shoots scheduled for Saturday. The shoot went very smoothly yesterday until Alysha was involved in a car accident on the way home. Thank goodness she is okay but her Jeep has seen better days. As I was driving home after sleeping in the studio for two weeks I had to stop and buy a razor. Unfortunately, I had to be back in military bearing for the day job this morning. All things considered the shoot went very well. Two days were rained out but we were able to make them up. Some last minute scheduling changes worked in our favor so Saturday and Sunday weren’t too crazy. Everyone got along very well. Jaxon and Alysha were great everyday. Andy was a lot of help. We couldn’t have pulled it off without him. Now after Saturday all we have to do is post it. Ahhhh!!!!! It will be a lot of work but it will be worth it. Hopefully we will get a trailer on the site within a week or two. Keep checking back!
Almost Done
11/4/2006 by Matt Davids
Today was a good day except for the sleet. We were able to get in a very emotional scene. Alysha played it very well. I have been continually impressed with our cast. In another scene I was able to shoot some really good angles. I'm very happy with all our footage. I must admit I'm getting very excited about this movie. Robot Monkey Lab deserves some credit. The animal masks were great. Lloyd Longsworth and Patrick Voss did excellent work. If you have any effects work that needs to be done give them a call. Well, we have tomorrow and next Saturday then we are finished with shooting. I can't wait to cut this movie together.
Fight Sequences Done
11/3/2006 by Justin Buchanan

Today we finished the shoot of the last fight sequence at the Junkyard. It was a very busy day, but we managed to finish with at least an hour of sunlight to spare. Things have been crazy around here the last few days, so we haven't had a chance to keep the website up to date. I've managed to post some new photos from the fight sequence tonight, so you can check those out. Our last two big days are coming up tommorow and Sunday. Bye for now!

Tired
11/3/2006 by Justin Buchanan
Working on fight scenes Thursday and Friday. Very tired now. Will post more when fight scenes done. I sleep now...
Lazy Days Over
10/28/2006 by Matt Davids

Two rainy days of watching Star Trek and baseball ended with a vengeance today. In the morning we shot another scene. This was the pivotal scene where Ezra and Feather meet. The footage looks great again. In the afternoon we moved to a river location in the Eureka studio backyard and shot a scene that is very important to me. I must admit I'm exhausted. Staying up late to watch the World Series probably didn't help but the Cardinals won! I'll take being a bit tired since they won but tonight I need some sleep! Tomorrow is another big day then Monday should be easy. We have a lot of work left but we are getting there. This week is going to be crazy!

Wash Out
10/27/2006 by Matt Davids
Two days have now been washed out which means next week will be very busy. We still have the bulk of shooting to complete but other than the last two days things have been great. Justin and I have taken advantage of the down days and started to edited. I am very pleased with what I am seeing. Jaxon and Alysha are really getting into their characters and giving fantastic performances. I've been able to get some excellent angles and all the locations have worked out well. I have a feeling that this movie will be very special. This weekend will see a lot of activity so keep checking back and be sure to look at our pictures.
A Storybook Garden
10/26/2006 by Justin Buchanan

Today we shot the end of Ezra Crane at the Jewel Box in Forest Park. The footage looks great and this location will give this critical scene a powerful backdrop. Thanks to the City of Saint Louis Parks Department for their help. Also a big thanks to Stephen Bain for working as our still photographer. Check out the pics for today!

In some not as good news, along with World Series game 4 being cancelled, we have been force to cancel shooting of the first fight sequence tommorow due to poor weather. We are working on rescheduling the shoot to next week. We are going to make use of the time off by begining the editing process on the scenes we have done. The opening of the movie, as well as the end are now pretty much in the can.

Day 1 Complete

IT'S A WINNER!!!
10/19/2006 by Justin Buchanan

I cannot take Cardinal games like that. I thought for a second Wainwright was going to pull an Izzy on us (and my nerves), but that was an awesome game! Now if we can just make a good movie during the World Series...

Before the game, we had our final rehearsal and meeting tonight. Principal begins on Saturday. I'm still really nervous that I forgot to aquire some critical prop or schedule a location, but oh well. If I did I don't know what it is.

Today after work I also picked up the final pieces of "animal men" costume which are several nice looking deer skins provided by my uncle. Hopefully they will give the animal men a nice look, although we havent' decided who's going to wear them yet. In other news, it cannot rain Thursday!

I also received a call from Lloyd tonight that the first mask is ready to pick up. Keep up the good work Lloyd and Pat over at Robot Monkey Lab!

Crazy
10/18/2006 by Matt Davids
The days are rapidly passing now and only a few remain until shooting. Things are getting crazy. I don’t know if I’m nervous but my stomach is upset and I’ve developed a facial tick. Is that bad? Oh, well… We actually do seem to be in a pretty good position. We have all the props and costumes done and organized. Our masks are coming in under the wire and they are looking fantastic. The cast is together and Jaxon’s and Alysha’s dedication blows me away. Scene plotting is going smoothly and I’m pushing myself to be as creative as I can. Be sure to check back we’ll be updating during production.
One Week Out
10/14/2006 by Matt Davids

Only one week until shooting begins. I can't believe it. A year and a half of writing and preproduction has flown by. Today Justin and I shot some plates to be used in a montage sequence. Unfortunately I made a critical error and some of the footage is unusable. I ordered myself to receive 40 lashes but it's hard to find a good Cat-of-Nine-Tails these days. So instead as punishment I will read the camera manual every day until shooting begins. Of course this makes me sound like an idiot but I'd rather be an honest idiot than a pompous windbag who claims he's never made a mistake. I will just make sure it does happen when we have actors on location. Justin and I also did a number of other last minute work. We posted a ton of new pictures of us testing night shooting, and a number of other things. Keep checking back.

Last Minute Madness
10/8/2006 by Matt Davids

This weekend was crazy. First, we went scene plotting. We revisited the junkyard, the graveyard and the lime kiln. I conformed some angles to the locations and conformed the locations to some angles. Whatever that means. I have a good command of how I'm going to shoot those scenes now which I was lacking before we went back. We also tested shooting outside at night again. This time we used a location which will be a key camping scene. The lights worked well and the trees casted great shadows. I think the scene should have a good look to it. We also dressed the dune buggy to look like a post-apocalyptic vehicle suitable for wandering amid forests. We gathered weapons for the animal men as well. Oh, Justin also saved my computer from being a $1,400 paper weight. It seems I let in the Trojans somehow. I'm fairly certain I didn't see a giant wooden horse though I can't be sure. We are less than two weeks away from shooting. I almost can't believe it. It seems like yesterday that we wrapped on Forever Cursed even though it's been a year and a half. I'm very excited about this movie and I can't wait. Remember we will be updating the blog during production so check back often.

Progress Continues
10/1/2006 by Justin Buchanan

Today we continued work on various tasks for Ezra. We worked more on the "animal men" clothes which are just about ready (minus a load of dirt and mud). Later in the day we walked through the locations of various scenes that we are going to shoot here at the What Madness studios backyard in Eureka. This helped me out a lot by determining what work I need to still do in preparing the locations, and helped Matt continue to get a picture in his mind about where the characters would be located in each shot, etc. Principal is coming just around the corner! We capped off the day with a phone call to our VFX expert at Robot Monkey Lab, Lloyd Longsworth. The masks are coming along very good and we are very pleased with what we've seen so far. Matt and I both can't wait for the finished product! Check out the pics of various props, wardrobe and the VFX progress on the "photos" page. There's a pic in there of me dressed up as an animal man for some reason too...

The Journey of Ezra Crane
9/30/2006 by Matt Davids

Shortly after Forever Cursed wrapped in May 05, Justin and I embarked on the long and arduous journey to the fabled Cave of Backyard Cinema. There we consulted with Barbaro, the Magic Mule-deer, who of course is the patron minor deity of Wannabe Filmmakers. He told us many things, many secret things. We studied at his hooves many months before we were allowed to ask the question that burned in our very hearts. We asked what we should do now that we had made our first self-produced feature. After a profound pause two words slipped from his hairy muzzle, “Make another.” So began a new journey that would become Ezra Crane, What Madness Production’s latest feature motion picture.

Well, maybe that’s not exactly what happened. The real story is that one day while I was working on the Forever Cursed screenplay a character popped into my head. His name was Ezra Crane and he was a tormented soul. I jotted down this and a few ideas in my writer’s journal. I wasn’t in the position to do any more work on it since Forever Cursed was in full preproduction at the time. A few more ideas came here and there, but no real development. I clearly remember, even before we had shot our first feature, confidently declaring to Justin that Ezra Crane would be our second picture.

This worried Justin but I told him to relax. I’m an artist after all. I’d just wave my art wand over some paper and this weak, sketchy idea would spring into a robust screenplay. Shooting Forever Cursed proved to be a great distraction. I was a working director with another project already waiting in the wings. After shooting was done and my writing time was freed up again I pulled out my notes. And what did I see? I saw a scant character outline with a few images and nothing remotely resembling a story or a scenario. A few days passed and I stared at the notes and no screenplay appeared. Now I was worried.

I buckled down. I wrote an outline. I fleshed out the character. I scribbled down some scenes. I had a lot more material now, so I took a step back and looked at it. What I had was an interesting character talking to other interesting characters which of course would make one uninteresting movie. I cursed art and inspiration and the muse. I renamed my self Simeon. I took to wandering the streets. I shouted incoherent ramblings to the fools that walk blindly in this world believing that art is real.

Alright, what I actually did was sit down look hard at what I had. I noticed right a way that one scene was better than all the rest. Ezra meets a young girl and she proves to be an enigma. She knows more than her years would suggest and has an air of innocence. I was taken with this scene. Suddenly, I remembered a scenario for a short film that I had banged out a number of years ago called Nobody’s Road. I searched through my journals and found it. It consisted of a fairly detailed plot outline but the characters were scarce.

Just at that moment it hit me. I had my characters Ezra Crane and the girl I had started calling Feather. Now I had my plot from Nobody’s Road. The only problem would be to meld them together. This turned out to be no problem at all. The characters fit into the plot like they had been made for it. More and more scenes came. I was a writing banshee.

The only problem that remained was to tell Justin that the movie was now set in a post-apocalyptic world. Of course to a producer this means more money and more time. I casually mentioned it to Justin. He flew into a rage. He demanded to be called Tetsuo. He took to the streets lamenting the ills of working with writer-directors. Okay, all he really said was that he didn’t care what I did as long as we could still shoot it for less than $7,000 and in two weeks. I said yes, of course, not knowing if we could or not.

Well here we are almost to begin principal and I think we are going to make it. The budget crept up a bit, but Justin said the movie deserved it. If any producers happen to be reading, directors and writers love hearing stuff like this. I mean love it! (Of course I’m paying for part of the movie as well so raising the budget hurts me too.) Now if I can only shoot it in two weeks dodging around job and school schedules things will be awesome.

I have to say that casting was hassle free. We met Jaxon through the Saint Louis Filmwire and were very impressed with his ability and his resume. During preproduction, he has proved over and over to be a dedicated professional. I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Alysha early in the writing process. Not only is she a talented actress, she is Feather. Each time she reads the part she gets better.

We have had to hire a special effects company to handle some of needs. Robot Monkey Lab is a small yet resourceful company here in St. Louis. Lloyd Longsworth and his team are putting together masks and a few other items for us. They were very gracious in conforming their rates to our budget so we were able to get some quality work without going over.

We have heeded Barbaro's advice and now we are about to give birth to a new movie. The board is set. The pieces are moving. Production is only weeks away and we have traveled far already. We will be posting updates during production so visit often in late October. Yet as we move closer and closer to the end of our quest those two words echo, “Make another...”

Night Testing, Costuming, Hiking and Sound… Boothing?
9/25/2006 by Matt Davids
This weekend Justin and I managed to accomplish a number of things. On Saturday we tested some 500 watt photofloods outside at night. This worked pretty well and should help us greatly as the days are getting shorter. I spent some time working on the animal men costumes. They are coming along pretty well and should look nice on screen. Yesterday, Justin and I hiked deep into the woods just off our back lot. We found a number of interesting sights that should work well for walk-bys. We also mapped out several campsites that will be featured prominently in the movie. After Justin came running into the studio yelling, “By the gods we’ll record our own sound!” he spent most of the weekend constructing a sound booth. Well, actually it’s been the works for awhile but it was completed this weekend. It should help improve our recording quality which is important because this movie will involve a large amount of ADR. Shooting starts in 25 days!
Jaxon and Alysha Meet
9/22/2006 by Matt Davids
Wednesday night saw a read through and the first meeting of Jaxon and Alysha. I must admit I was blown away. Jaxon and Alysha floored me. I almost cried during several emotional scenes and this was just the first read through. It is an extreme pleasure to be working with two such extraordinary actors. I can’t wait to see how they will perform when they are fully prepared and the camera is rolling. The production is gaining speed and we are only a month away from principle. Keep checking back for more updates.
Going to the Dogs!
9/16/2006 by Matt Davids
Today was interesting. We Went to Goodwill and bought clothes for the animal men. (Yes, I said "animal men.") We spent several hours making the clothes look like what animal men would wear. This involved spray paint, knives, bleach and other toxic substances. They look pretty good. This movie is making us do many weird things. Well, we do weird things a lot but this movie has us doing weird things even more than normal. Keep checking back shooting is just around the corner!
Justin's Been Stabbed?
9/9/2006 by Matt Davids

A lot has happened this week. We hired a special effects company to handle some of our needs. Lloyd Longsworth and Robot Money Lab will creating masks for the animal men as well as a few weapons. Robot Monkey Lab is a St. Louis based FX check them out at www.robotmonkeylab.com.

We have done a lot more work on the costumes and we put together a tentative shooting schedule. We've gathered some props and hammered out how to shoot some complex scenes. We figured out how to stab someone. I mean fake stab someone. Check out these photos of Justin.

Five weeks until shooting starts and we are getting excited. Everything seems to be coming together. We have a ton of work ahead of but it should be an awesome experience. More news is coming so keep checking back.

Meeting
8/26/2006 by Matt Davids
Jaxon came to the studio today and we had a long and productive meeting. We discussed the character in depth as well as scheduling and other logistical items. We are very pleased by Jaxon's dedication. Things seem to be falling into place and we getting very excited. More updates will coming soon.
Progress Report
8/22/2006 by Matt Davids
Work on Ezra is progressing well. I’m continuing minor revisions on the screenplay (hopefully more today). Saturday saw a lot of work on costumes and props. Casting for the “Animal Men” is going well. One bit of news is that we are working on securing a spectacular location for the ending. I’ll have to do some rewriting, but it’ll be worth it. Once we get permission we’ll make an announcement. We have a lot of work to do, but things are getting very exciting. Keep checking back!
Costume Party!
7/29/2006 by Matt Davids
Well, it wasn't actually a party, but we did spend most of the day costume shopping. We went to Uncle Sam's and bought some things that will work for Ezra's outfit. We found an awesome old backpack that will work quite well. In fact, we got lots of things that will work great. We also wandered around Wal-mart for like hour and a half. We picked up some odds and ends to make the AI. Yes, this script is somewhat out of hand. We also got a couple of things to top off Feather's costume. The days are flying by and shooting will be upon us all very soon.
Equipment Tests
7/22/2006 by Matt Davids
Work on Ezra Crane continued today as we tested all our new toys. I particularly enjoyed the monopod. It should provide a different look. I do have to say that the mic and the wind system is awesome. We shot some test footage and the audio is excellent. Wind was blowing like crazy, but the dead cat and the blimp system worked like a charm. We shouldn't lose a day's shooting to wind like we did on Forever Cursed, which will make me very happy. We are still expecting a few items, but our main equipment is now in place. We are well on our way to being able to shoot our second feature motion picture.
New Equipment Bonanza
7/19/2006 by Justin Buchanan

The What Madness Studios look more like a shipping/receiving dock this week as we have been getting loads of new equipment in preparation for Ezra Crane. With still more boxes to come, we are sure giving the UPS and DHL guys a workout this week.

Some of our new equipment worth mentioning:
  • Audio Technica 4073a Shotgun Mic (link)
  • Rycote Modular Windshield kit (link)
  • Audio Technica 3035 Studio Condenser Mic (link)
  • Large quantities of Auralex StudioFoam
  • 2 new DVX batteries from dvxuser.com
  • M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB audio interface/preamp

As you can see we are mostly spending money on audio equipment this time around. Since our DVX100A was a significant portion of the budget of Forever Cursed, we have a lot more flexiblity in our spending plan on Ezra Crane which is allowing us to greatly improve our field and studio audio equipment while still keeping our "low-budget" plan.

Scene Read Throughs
7/19/2006 by Matt Davids

Last night Alysha and I went over some scenes again. I am very pleased with her attitude not to mention her acting ability. The scenes read well so far and I couldn’t be happier. It’s always a little awkward hearing what you’ve written spoken for the first time. However, it’s exciting too.

In the last few days, I’ve rewritten one entire scene due to the fact of a location change. That’s one of the problems of low-budget filmmaking, but it’s also one of the benefits because I believe the scene is better off with the rewrite. Imagination doesn’t cost any money and the best way to solve problems is with creativity.

Breaking Down Scenes and Goodwill Costuming
7/16/2006 by Matt Davids

Yesterday, Justin and I went through the whole screenplay and placed each scene with a location. This was the first vital step in setting up a production schedule. It will be tight, but we can pull it off.

Today, I dragged Alysha around town to a couple of Goodwill stores. We were able to find some clothes that will work well as her costume. I still need a few things like shoes and a backpack, but the main stuff is taken care of. It should be an interesting look.

I’m looking forward to this shoot more and more each day. I really think that this will be special in some way.

Gearing Up
7/15/2006 by Matt Davids

It’s hard to stay consistent with posting when so much is going on. Submitting Forever Cursed to fests is taking up lots of time, but it seems to be paying off.

I have to say Ezra is developing well. We have our main cast in place, which is a great relief. I couldn’t be happier with our actors and I can’t wait to see them work. I started working a bit with Alysha on Tuesday night. She is a natural talent. She really embodies her character. Again, I cannot wait to see her on the screen.

The screenplay is not technically finished, but I feel I’m very close. I’ve started doing a breakdown. I’m separating scenes and placing them in locations that we have scouted. I’m figuring out my shots to a degree. With low-budget filmmaking you never have enough time, so I have to have everything planned out as much as possible. We can’t waste time on location coming up with ideas. I need to have them all in place or at least most of them. Sure it’s not the best way to work, but it’s the only way I can work until a studio gives me millions of dollars.

I must admit I’m getting really excited about this movie even more so than I was with Forever Cursed. I feel I’ve learned so much my doing Forever Cursed. I feel more confident going into Ezra that I can get certain things that I need to make a movie. It will be fun to get behind the camera again. Also, this will be another great learning experience. I will then be able to take what I’ll learn from this movie and apply it to others.

Please keep checking back as the journey of making Ezra Crane will be posted here. If you’re a filmmaker always remember the best advice is: get a camera (any camera), make a movie and show it to people.

Jaxon Stanford is Ezra Crane
7/10/2006 by Justin Buchanan
Jaxon Stanford has won the title role of "Ezra Crane." We are very happy to be working with such a talented and versatile actor. A bio and pictures are coming soon, for more information on Stanford, check out his website at www.jaxonstanford.com.
Chocolate Cheesecake and Location Scouting
6/15/2006 by Justin Buchanan

Friday the 9th Matt and I met at Barnes & Noble to talk about the movie and go over the candidates to play "Ezra" we have received thus far. I think I did more reading of gun magazines and consuming chocolate cheesecake than actually contributing to the betterment of the movie, but oh well.

Saturday we went out early in the morning to check out the junk yard location in Union, MO. It looks like it will work out great and will be a pretty interesting location to shoot in. Now we just need an abandoned house and a large ominous warehouse in a wasteland... Sorry no pictures with this post, I forgot to take any at the junk yard.

Formerly Crime Ridden Bridges and a Wizard's Tower.
5/27/2006 by Matt Davids

Location scouting commenced today with a trip the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. We think that it will work well in one of the montage sequences. Unfortunately the parks department added bright blue railings to the sides of the bridge which will mean that I have to get very creative with my camera angles, though that could be an advantage. Anything that makes us use our imaginations is good. We also scoped out a water tower in St. Louis that looks like a wizard's tower. Sadly we did not get any pictures of the wizard's tower because Justin left the camera in the car. We did have a little excitement today when we got pulled over by a cop. It seems that Justin was driving the wrong way on a one way street. St. Louis' finest turned out to be a very nice lady. She bought the story that we were location scouting for an independent movie. Of course we are very glad she did since it was the truth. So Justin narrowly escaped getting a ticket. Secretly I was hoping he would get one. If you want to see some pictures click here.

Rocks of Enormous Size!
5/20/2006 by Matt Davids

We started the day by looking into the truth behind the Da Vinci Code. Fortunately it only took four minutes to prove it is complete fiction and has no basis in fact whatsoever, therefore, we had plenty of time to work on Ezra Crane. Official location scouting kicked off with a trek to southern MO. Justin and I traveled an hour and a half south of St. Louis to a little known but spectacular geological feature of the state of Missouri. Massive granite boulders lie strewn about the land creating a unique and imposing vista. We battled snakes and lizards. We trudged over terrain that has never known the tread of man. We were lost in a prehistoric world... Okay, some of that is out of hand but we did identify a few places that will be featured prominently in the movie. We hope to be able to show some landscapes that have never been seen on the big screen. Check out our pictures of this incredible location.

Writing is Rewriting
4/22/2006 by Matt Davids

I'm still doing drafts of the screenplay. I think I'm about to the point where I have all my scenes. I just need to go over them some more times making them smoother and such. This screenplay is complex and it is making me grow as a writer.

I've also been studying a lot movies trying to learn as much as possible. The major disadvantage of not going to film school is that you don't get to watch like eight rare movies a week. So I'm doing the best I can with Blockbuster Online. I've been watching some Japanese films mostly Takeshi Kitano and some Kurosawa classics. I went back and rewatched some old post-apocalyptic films. I identified some cliches that I'm going to avoid like the plague. Hopefully more news will be coming soon.

Website Launch
4/15/2006 by Matt Davids
Welcome to the website for Ezra Crane, a feature film from What Madness Productions. We don't have much content yet but more is coming. Having self-produced Forever Cursed we have foolishly begun making another DV motion picture. We are very excited about this project. The screenplay is nearing completion and within a month or two casting should began. Location scouting and prop gathering are set to start very soon as well. As we proceed through the phases of production we will be updating often, documenting the making of a low-budget independent movie. Please spread the word concerning Ezra Crane and What Madness Productions.
